Medieval or Welsh Dragon Brooch

!
Wonderfully Carved

This a very detailed dragon carved by James E. Boyle of The Rams Horn.  It was hand cast in fine pewter and all the findings were hand soldered.  This brooch was signed by the artist.  The pin has a hinged pin and safety clasp. The animal called a dragon is like a winged crocodile with a serpent's tail; whence the words serpent and dragon are sometimes interchangeable. From the meaning a watcher we get the notion of one that watches; and from the meaning “to flash,” we connect the word with meteors. Swift, swift, ye dragons of the night:—that dawning May bare the raven's eye. The Greek word drakon comes from a verb meaning “to see,” to “look at,” and more remotely “to watch” and “to flash.” This dragon would love to flash for you and bring you luck.

Large Greenman Pendant

Oak leaves and antlers Greenman

A Green Man is a sculpture, drawing, or other representation of a face surrounded by or made from leaves. Branches or vines may sprout from the nose, mouth, nostrils or other parts of the face and these shoots may bear flowers or fruit. Commonly used as a decorative architectural ornament, Green Men are frequently found on carvings in churches and other buildings (both secular and ecclesiastical). "The Green Man" is also a popular name for British public houses and various interpretations of the name appear on inn signs, which sometimes show a full figure rather than just the head. The back of this pendant is textured.  It comes with a 24 Inch stainless steel chain with a sliver wash.  This greenman is 1 and 5/8 inches high. It was hand cast here at The Rams Horn.

Epona , Celtic Horse Pendant

!

Celtic, Zoomorphic, Horse Design

This is the classic Celtic Horse design as seen on our other pieces but this pendant is a wonderful size and very striking. This is a Celtic disc pendant that can be worn on a chain or a cord.   It is hand cast in solid, lead free, jeweler's pewter and signed by the artist.  The design was taken from Bain and is a wonderful Celtic, zoomorphic, horse design, seen here at close to actual size.  The pendant is 1 and 1/4 inches without the loop.  This is in between the size of our pin /pendant and the Celtic horse necklace we offer on eBay.  This Celtic Horse Pendant would be very attractive worn with our Celtic Horse earrings.   The etching is deeper and clearer and the impact of this pendant is visually like a jewel.  It  is slightly domed and cast in one piece.  (no solder joints to break).   We are sure someone you love would be thrilled to receive this fine piece as a gift.  This piece is signed by the artist, James E. Boyle.

Phoenix Pin

!

A symbol of fire and divinity!

A phoenix is a mythical bird with a tail of beautiful gold and red plumage. At the end of its life-cycle the phoenix builds itself a nest of cinnamon twigs that it then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix arises. The new phoenix is destined to live, usually, as long as the old one. In some stories, the new phoenix embalms the ashes of the old phoenix in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis (sun city in Greek). The bird was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus being almost immortal and invincible — a symbol of fire and divinity! This pin has two pins cast in place and comes with a pinch back type tack clasps.

Griffins are normally known for guarding treasure. In antiquity it was a symbol of divine power and a guardian of the divine. Dominance over the sea, and the water element.

This pin has two pins cast in place and comes with a pinchback type tack clasps. The Dragon thunders in the sky with the sound of compassion that awakens us from delusion and increases what we can know through hearing. Dragons have the power of complete communication. Just as we do not see sound, we do not see dragons -- at least not usually. Displaying a dragon banner is said to protect one from slander and enhances one's reputation.  Associations: main quality is power, dominance over the sea, and the water element. This small dragon was hand cast in fine pewter by The Rams Horn Studio

Thor's Hammer

!

Those who worshiped the god Thor often wore pendants in the shape of his hammer which in fact had a name which was Mjolnir.  Widely popular in Scandinavia, they were used in Blóts and other sacral ceremonies, such as weddings. Mjolnir simply means "crusher," referring to its pulverizing effect.  It has been suggested that although the name reflects Mjolnir's awesome powers it might also allude to Thor's agricultural nature, as he was primarily worshiped by farmers. The other side of this pendant is decorated with spirals. This hammer is 1 and 1/2 inches high.

Viking or Norse Horn

!

This horn pendant comes on a waxed cotton cord.  This horn was hand cast in fine pewter by The Rams Horn Studio. This is a signed piece by Beth Maxwell Boyle . The Norse drank strong drink from the horns of cattle and also fashioned blowing horns from animal horn. This horn was sculpted in fine detail with braided edges and spiral decorations common in Norse art.

Norse or Celtic Ram Head

Celtic Sword and Targe Pendant

!

Scottish Broad Sword & Targe

This Pendant is large.  It is a Scottish broad sword & shield (Targe) The targe is 1 and 1/4 inches and the sword measures almost 4 inches in length. The Pendant is hand cast in solid, lead free, jeweler's pewter and signed by the artist.  The Celtic horse knott design was taken from Bain and is a wonderful Celtic, zoomorphic, horse design. The two handed broadsword was used by many Scots throughout history, most famous of these being William Wallace. Although heavier than other swords, the broadsword offers much more range and power. It is old here on a black waxed cotton cord.

Flying Bat Pendant

!

The bat is 1 and 7/8 Inches from wing tip to wing tip.  It comes on a waxed cotton cord in basic black. This bat in flight was hand cast in fine pewter by The Rams Horn Studio

Hindu Goddess Kali Pendant

!
Goddess of Time and Change

Kali, also known as Kalika is a Hindu goddess associated with death and destruction. Despite her negative connotations, she is not actually the goddess of death, but rather of Time and Change. Although sometimes presented as black and violent, her earliest incarnation as a figure of annihilation still has some influence. More complex Tantric beliefs sometimes extend her role so far as to be the "Ultimate Reality" or Brahman. She is also revered as Bhavatarini (lit. "redeemer of the universe"). Comparatively recent devotional movements largely conceive Kali as a benevolent mother-goddess.Kali is represented as the consort of god Shiva, on whose body she is often seen standing. This pendant has a loop on the back for a chain or cord and was hand cast here at The Rams Horn Studio. This comes on awaxed, black, cotton cord.

Sword and Targe, Celtic Horses Kilt Pin

!

With a strong Military Pin & Clasp

This is a very handsome, Celtic horse, sword and targe, kilt Pin.  The two handed broadsword was used by many Scots throughout history, most famous of these being William Wallace. Although heavier than other swords, the broadsword offers much more range and power. This kilt pin was hand cast in our studio.  This is a large, sturdy, kilt pin made to last a life time.  It has a heavy military-style pin and safety catch meant to hold well on a thick, wool kilt.  This is not like the cheap pins so often sold in shops that are more suited as ornamental pins to decorate a Lady's skirt. The classic zoomorphic, horse design after Bain, is a design also seen on several other Celtic pieces in The Rams Horn, Celtic line.  The design is deeply etched and crisply cast.  This Scottish style pin is hand cast in solid, lead-free, jeweler's pewter and signed by the artist. Inspired by the Pictish carvings of horses in Inverurie, Scotland, this is a timeless classic. The targe or round shield is cast in one piece on the broadsword so there are not pieces to come apart and the pin closure is hand soldered by the artist, James E. Boyle here in our studio. The targe is 1 and 1/4 inches and the sword measures almost 4 inches in length. This would make an ideal gift or piper's trophy. Please see our other listings for more Scottish and Celtic pewter?

Spirit of the Corn , Native American Brooch

!

This brooch is really handsome and could be worn by a man or a women.  The native American form is emerging from maize stalks.  The heads of corn and the details of the  native figure are really well done.  We reproduced this brooch from an antique piece we recently aquired. This would look very sharp on a vest or hat. This brooch was hand cast in fine pewter by The Rams Horn Studio

Cardigan Fairy Rider Pin

!

Here is a great new pin that is part Beth's work and part Jim's.  Jim carved this delightful piece from one of Beth's drawings.  An old Welsh folk legend says that some red and some brindle Cardigan Welsh Corgis have markings around their shoulders that are saddle marks left there by the faerie folk who use the wee dogs as steeds.    It is also said that on the green mountains and in the deep misty glens of Cardiganshire in Wales, one can still see the fairies and elves riding the spritely Corgwn through the moonlight. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a breed known to be over 2000 years old.  They were brought to the British Isles by the Celts These dogs have a great deal of heart and spirit..  These are signed by the artist and the findings are all hand soldered.  This pin is highly detailed  from the feather in the elf's cap to the  fur of the Cardi's tail.

Celtic Beasties Panel Brooch

!
Zoomorphic Panel Brooch

This extraordinary, carved, panel brooch was created by James E. Boyle using a ancient zoomorphic design on a Celtic Stone for inspiration. These Celtic Beasties are very dragon-like and strongly resemble Norse carvings and may in fact reflect Norse influence.  The piece is hand cast in lead-free jeweler's pewter in our studio and is polished to a warm, antique finish to bring out the detail. The findings are hand soldered and the hinged pin is secured by a safety clasp.
